How to style a Spring Tablescape
Whether you’re spending more time at home, or just looking to create an intimate weekend or weekday dinner for two, a little pop of spring colour is the best way to ring in the new season.
I found these potted daffodil bulb plants at the local nursery and decided these would be great to create a table-scape but also be able to have a life beyond the dinner table out in the garden to inject some colour.
THEME
Even though I created this simple table-scape on a whim, it still started with a concept. The potted daffodils gave me the idea to do a pop of yellow which says “Spring’ and from there, I fleshed out the look by adding a scattering of fresh lemons, vintage candle sticks and contrasting mix of earthy ceramic dinnerware and high polish crystal glassware.
LINEN
You can never go wrong with a crisp white linen tablecloth. I actually used a king linen flat sheet from Bemboka. I also have a collection of linen napkins, which is the easiest way to create a formality, but allows you to get creative with how they are placed. Whether you neatly fold into half or thirds, or loosely lay over the edge of the table, playing with the placement as well as colour and pattern napkins, is a key detail.
FLORAL
My rule for floral has always been, KEEP IT SIMPLE. I love using one colour, and either one species of flower en masse, or a few different varieties in a tonal palette i.e. shades of pinks, purples, reds. I used potted daffodils I found at the local nursery, and potted them into cut glass vases in varying sizes to play with the idea of being outside in Spring, and contrasting the raw dirt with the glamorous vases, is a simple design touch that is a great talking point.
STYLING
With the overall theme being ‘Spring’, to enhance the floral, I scattered loose lemons at the base of the vases, then to create mood and introduce a vintage touch, I added brass candle sticks with matte grey candles. The contrast of these materials and colour against a crisp white tablecloth makes a bold statement yet is also crisp and tailored in its simplicity.
TABLEWARE
Another element to play with whenever creating a table-scape is the dinnerware. Because the secondary concept was a play on ‘earthy meets glam’, I used hand made white ceramic plates, vintage silverware and cut crystal glassware. I always love to play with glassware, whether by adding a coloured tumbler or playing with contrasting styles of glasses. Here, using a Waterford Crystal champagne coupe, coupled with a contemporary clean cut tumbler, creates interest.
